I GOT HACKED ON SOCIAL MEDIA

Previously and up to date a lot of social media accounts including Facebook, Instagram and twitter have been getting hacked. What this means is that someone can bypass the security of your social accounts and can access every information. Even worse, they can pose as the owner of the account and request contacts on the platform to either send them money or they can upload malicious and false information with your virtual identity.

THREE WAYS ONE CAN GET HACKED ON SOCIAL MEDIA…….

  • 1. PHISHING

This is usually when the hacker creates a fake Facebook or Instagram account and send you an email with a link. Once you click on the link, it will direct you to login to your account. Once you have logged in and inserted your username and password, your authentication details are instantly sent back to the hacker's email who will then login using your details. This is the most frequently used method as most account holders do not know whether the other account is fake or not.

  • 2. MALICIOUS USE OF STORED PASSWORDS

Most of us prefer to save our login passwords using either a password manager or we tick the box to store our passwords on the browser. This is highly unadvisable as it is an easy access for hackers to obtain passwords.

  • 3. KEYLOGGING

This form of hack is usual deployed using a malware that uses a keylogging software. What usually happens is that a hacker will send a malware into your device that will record every text and every username, passwords, emails, banking details when you use your devices. Thereafter, the hacker is able to obtain the information on the malware and hack your account. This malware is usually downloaded by mistake online or when visiting certain websites.

HOW TO PROTECT YOUR LOGIN DETAILS
  • 1. Use a virtual private network to encrypt your data and to hide your online activities.
  • 2. Follow an NIST framework.
  • 3. Go to your device, then settings, click security and turn on the two-factor authentication.
  • 4. Do not login to your account from other websites that are not official Instagram partners. Always login directly from your App.
  • 5. Do not click on suspicious links sent to you via email or your inbox.
  • 6. Only login into your social media accounts using your own devices. Avoid using internet cafes or libraries or any public computers.

Some hackers will login to your account just to delete your content. this is what you can do to avoid losing content. Go to settings >>go to the search box and type in “download your information” >> type in your email address and password and thereafter content is sent to your email.

These are some of the easy steps one can use to make it difficult for any third party to hack into your social media account.
